This is a Career-Ladder position.

As a Police Dispatcher Trainee: you will receive on-the-job training, specific to day-to-day direction, and will be closely supervised and monitored.  Is not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skills as Dispatchers, and exercises less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. You would then be able to transfer to TCC Police Dispatcher level is based on meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory job performance, and a 90-day probationary period. 

Trainee focuses on either Transit Police dispatch or Fixed Route Bus Operations.  Under general supervision, trains in performing dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency transit calls; dispatches appropriate personnel to calls for service; and operates communication equipment including radio, telephone, and computer systems.  Assists in coordinating continuous operation and system support services for bus operators, transit police, operations supervisors, paratransit coordinators, rail controllers, and others in the transit system in resolving problems as they arise.  Receives, prioritizes, and responds to all routine and emergency calls and dispatches transit police officers and/or operations personnel as needed to minimize delays due to breakdowns, detours, work coverage, accidents, emergencies, changing road conditions, and other interruptions.  Receives and responds to inquiries requiring research of warrants, UTA violation history and criminal history, mapping systems, system detour information, and other databases.  Assists public agencies with transit-related issues upon request. Assists in collecting and disseminating system-related data to all appropriate departments.  Remains focused, calm, and composed while demonstrating compassion and efficiency during stressful, fast-paced, and unpredictable situations.

 

Transit Communications Police Dispatcher:  Dispatcher will focus on either Transit Police dispatch or Fixed-Route Bus Operations.  Specializes in the performance of dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency transit calls, dispatches appropriate personnel to calls for service, and operates a wide variety of communication equipment including radio, telephone, and computer systems.  Coordinates continuous operation and system support services for bus operators, transit police, operations supervisors, paratransit coordinators, rail controllers and/or other persons in the transit system in resolving problems as they arise.  Receives, prioritizes, and responds to all routine and emergency calls and as needed to minimize delays due to breakdowns, detours, work coverage, accidents, emergencies, changing road conditions and other interruptions.  If assigned, dispatches transit police officers.  Receives and responds to inquiries requiring research of warrants, UTA violation history and criminal history, mapping systems, system detour information, and other databases. Works with public agencies with transit-related issues upon request. Minimum Qualifications

This is a Career-Ladder position.

Transit Communications Police Dispatcher Trainee:

EDUCATION/TRAINING: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus two years post-high school training or college education with emphasis on communications and/or business management, or related fields preferred
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification preferred
  • POST Dispatch Certification preferred
  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Two years in customer service solving problems and giving direction

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Basic proficiency in MS Word and Excel preferred
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing, including able to remain calm and rational in emergency situations and communicate with incoherent, emotionally distraught, hysterical, unresponsive, or non-receptive individuals.
  • Become certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher if not already certified
  • Attain CPR/First Aid certification if not already certified
  • 40  WPM preferred
  • Work any scheduled shift as assigned within a 24/7/365 rotation to ensure continuous operation of the Transit Communications Center

 

Transit Communications  Police Dispatcher: 

Incumbents at this level have a minimum of 2 years of applicable dispatch experience outside of Utah Transit Authority, or 1 year experience as a Dispatcher in either the Transit Police or Operations function.  Incumbent exercises independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.  Advancement from TCC Dispatcher Trainee to TCC Dispatcher is based on meeting the minimum qualifications, satisfactory job performance.

EDUCATION/TRAINING: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus two years post-high school training or college education with emphasis on communications and/or business management, or related fields preferred
  • Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification preferred or ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • POST Dispatch Certification preferred or the ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification preferred or the ability to obtain within 1 year.

EXPERIENCE:

Operations Dispatcher:

  • 2 years customer service and/or dispatch experience solving problems and giving direction
  • Strong knowledge of all Fixed Route Bus Operations Systems and routes preferred
  • Continuously demonstrate all operational required training, certifications and core competencies
  • Strong knowledge of bus equipment to assist operators with mechanical issues preferred
  • Able to orient yourself using a mapping system and have the ability to give instruction to drivers
  • Vehicle maintenance familiarity and experience dealing with vehicle related issues

Transit Police Dispatcher:

  • 2 years customer service and/or dispatch experience solving problems and giving direction
  • Strong knowledge of all police required training, procedures, methods, certifications and core competencies
  • Strong understanding and able to interpret Utah Criminal Code, BCI / UCJIS manuals, and maps
  • Become POST certified as a dispatcher through the state of Utah and maintain certification if not already certified

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Word and Excel preferred
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing, including being able to remain calm and rational in emergency situations and communicate with incoherent, emotionally distraught, hysterical, unresponsive, or non-receptive individuals
  • Ability to work any scheduled shift within a 24/7/365 rotation to ensure continuous operation of the Transit Communications Center
  • Become certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher if not already certified
  • Attain CPR/First Aid certification if not already certified
  • Type at least 40 WPM preferred

Both jobs require regular and predictable attendance.
