JOB SUMMARY

Assists in coordinating and facilitating UTA efforts to promote responsible use of resources and to protect the natural environment – principally through environmental stewardship goals and sustainability strategies.  Assists in updating sustainability plans that include sustainable design and operational strategies for administrative, maintenance, and passenger facilities. Helps champion recycling initiatives, waste reduction policies, and utility reduction approaches agency wide. Helps monitor sustainability effectiveness and progress through performance objectives and annual benchmark reporting. Assists in establishing and maintaining partnerships with local and regional entities whose initiatives promote resource conservation, waste management, air quality, sustainable technologies, and increased transit use along the Wasatch Front. Researches industry best practices to assist in implementing environmental stewardship goals and sustainability strategies. Participates in an intra-agency Sustainability Team to further formulate, develop, and implement agency environmental stewardship efforts. 

 This is a Career-Ladder position.

EDUCATION/TRAINING: 

Level l
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Earth Sciences, Engineering or related field.

Level ll
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Earth Sciences, Engineering or related field. Master’s Degree preferred

Level lll
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Earth Sciences, Engineering or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.

 EXPERIENCE: 

Level l
This is an entry level position. Completion of a 6+ month related internship (urban, transportation, municipal, environmental) preferred.
Level ll
Four years transit experience or two years transit experience and two years of related experience. (A relevant master’s degree or professional certification/license may substitute for two years of related experience.)
Level lll
Eight years transit experience or six years transit experience and two years of related experience. (A relevant Master’s degree or professional certification/license may substitute for two years of related experience.)

 Demonstrated current knowledge of sustainability practices as they relate to transit agencies, calculating pollutant and GHG emissions, and familiarity with ISO 14001 Energy Management Systems.  Demonstrated ability to play a lead role in coordinating environmental stewardship efforts.

 To carry out essential functions of this job, must have a valid Utah’s driver’s license with no more than four moving violations in the past three years; or, if a non-driver, must be able to travel efficiently by another means to and from varied locations within UTA’s service area.  Lack of a driver’s license does not necessarily preclude employment.  No applicant may have more than one violation of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs within the last ten years. 

 This job requires regular and predictable attendance.
